If you ever find yourself standing at the entrance of the Frauenkirche, Munich’s most iconic landmark, don’t just look up at the massive domes—take a moment to look down. Near the entrance, you’ll find a mysterious black mark on the floor that looks exactly like a human footprint.
Locals call it the “Devil’s Footprint.”
According to the legend, the devil himself was furious when he heard that the people of Munich were building such a grand church. He struck a deal with the builder: he would provide funds for the construction, but only if the church was built without any windows.
The builder was clever, though. He constructed the church in a way that, from the entrance, the rows of massive pillars completely block the view of the windows. When the devil walked into the church for the first time and saw no windows, he was overjoyed—until he took a few steps inside and realized he had been tricked by the light flooding through the hidden windows. In his rage, he stamped his foot so hard that he left an eternal mark on the stone floor.
I love this story because it captures the spirit of Munich: we are a city that respects tradition, but we also appreciate a bit of wit and cleverness.
